Bribe Money for Silence? Not in Batangas
Bribe Money for Silence? Not in Batangas
A DPWH engineer in Batangas was arrested after allegedly offering millions in bribe money to stop a lawmaker’s probe on shady infrastructure projects.

When a public official thinks he can buy silence with millions in cash, it reveals how deeply corruption has poisoned our system. Last week in Batangas, a DPWH district engineer was caught allegedly offering a huge bribe to Rep. Leandro Leviste, hoping the young congressman would look the other way in his probe on suspicious projects. Instead of buying peace, he bought himself handcuffs.

This case is more than just a headline. It’s a mirror reflecting the culture of corruption that ordinary Filipinos have long endured. For every bridge that cracks before its time, for every road that erodes after the first rain, there’s often a story of money that never went where it should have. It is the people—the jeepney driver dodging potholes, the mother paying higher taxes, the student crossing unsafe footbridges—who pay the real price of this rot.

Rep. Leviste’s decision to stand firm sends a message: integrity is not for sale. In a time when many have grown cynical about politics, such resolve is a small but powerful reminder that not everyone bows to dirty money. It’s a lesson not just for public officials, but for every Filipino who has ever been tempted to say, “Ganyan talaga, wala na tayong magagawa.”

We must remember: corruption thrives when people look away. The bribe that was offered in Batangas was not just a crime against one lawmaker—it was a theft from every Filipino family waiting for honest roads, schools, and hospitals.

The challenge now is to make sure this case does not fade into just another story. Will the DPWH leadership act decisively? Will the courts move swiftly? Will the people continue to demand accountability?

Because if silence can be bought, then justice can be buried. But if we, as a nation, keep speaking, keep watching, and keep fighting—then no amount of money can ever silence the Filipino spirit.
